The Tom Willoughby
The Tom Willoughby
Tom Willoughby has provided opportunities for school leavers to enter the building trade for the last 50 years through a successful and well-respected training programme.
In addition to its traditional apprenticeships in building trades, including groundwork’s, bricklaying and joinery, the training academy is working with local universities to offer degree apprenticeships in quantity surveying, estimating and modern apprenticeships in business administration.

Site Operative Training
As we directly employ Craft Operatives on our sites, safety is our primary concern. We provide regular and ongoing training, including tool box talks, to ensure everyone can carry out their roles safely, efficiently and to the highest possible standard.
We work closely with ConstructionSkills and New College Durham & Darlington College to offer structured, 3 year apprenticeships in the traditional building trades such as Brickwork and Joinery.
This gives committed and talented young people an opportunity to gain an NVQ3 qualification and a secure future career with Tom Willoughby.

Here at Tom Willoughby we fully understand the importance of Health & Safety and how significant our role is within the community to help and reduce the number of accidents attributed to building sites. As part of that commitment we employ Ivor Goodsite, an industry mascot created by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, to educate children on the dangers of playing on building sites. Ivor also educates the children on the industry and highlights how great it is to work in construction!
Ivor conducts assemblies with a member of our Health & Safety Team at local Schools surrounding our building sites. We also conduct regular competitions to engage the children and to allow them to demonstrate what they have learnt. Ivor has even been known to get involved the odd Sports Day Event!
