Tom Willoughby Delivers Landmark Refurbishment at Redcar Racecourse

This week Redcar Racecourse opens its gates for the first fixtures of the 2026 season. As the horses head to the track and jockeys prepare in the changing rooms, they’ll be doing so in facilities that have been completely transformed, delivered by our team at Tom Willoughby.

The Project:

The brief from Redcar Racecourse went well beyond a routine refresh. Our team was appointed to carry out the full alteration and refurbishment of four key areas within the racecourse complex: the Weighing Room, the Medical Room, the Male Jockey Changing Room, and the creation of a brand-new changing room and showering facilities for female jockeys.

That final element is particularly significant. Purpose-built facilities for female jockeys reflect the growing profile of women in professional racing and ensure Redcar is properly equipped for the modern sport.

The scope of works was comprehensive, covering every stage and trade from the ground up, over a five month period:

• Full strip-out and demolition by clearing the existing spaces entirely to allow the new works to begin with a clean slate.

• New foundations and concrete floor slabs, to ensure that the structural groundwork was laid to the highest standard, providing a solid base for everything above.

• Significant changes to the building included a full new roof to ensure long-term weathertightness and performance.

• To enhance the internal layouts, stud and partition walls used to create distinct, functional spaces across all four areas.

• Full mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations to bring all facilities up to current standards.

• New windows and doors to provide improved natural light, ventilation, access, and security throughout.

• Sanitary ware installations – The new facilities fitted to a high standard across the male and female changing rooms as well as the renovated medical room.

• The project was completed with quality decoration and floor finishes throughout, giving every space a clean and professional appearance.

About Redcar Racecourse:

Redcar Racecourse is one of the great flat racing venues in British racing. Founded in 1872, it has hosted racing on the Yorkshire coast for over 150 years, attracting racegoers and competitors from across the country each season.

Working on a venue of this heritage carries a real responsibility. These aren’t just rooms in a building, they’re spaces that, away from the racetrack, form part of the beating heart of a racecourse. The Weighing Room in particular is a critical hub: it’s where jockeys are weighed before and after each race, where stewards convene, and where the official result of every race is formally recorded.

With the 2026 season now underway, Redcar can welcome jockeys, officials, and racegoers into facilities that are fully modernised, fully compliant, and built to last. We’re proud to have played a central role in getting one of Yorkshire’s most iconic racing venues ready for another season.
